Hickory is among the hardest and strongest of woods native to the United States. It is harder than white oak and hard maple. The heartwood is light to medium brown. The sapwood is a paler yellowish brown. Care is needed while working with hickory as machining tearout is common if cutting edges are not kept sharp. Hickory glues, stains, and finishes well. Common uses of hickory are tool handles, wooden ladders, wheel spokes, flooring, furniture, cabinetry and dowels.
