The heartwood of red elm is light to medium reddish brown. The sapwood is paler and usually well defined. The grain is interlocked making it very resistant to splitting. Red elm is fairly easy to work with, however, it can be challenging due to the interlocked grain. Planing can cause tearout or fuzzy surfaces. Red elm glues, stains, and finishes well. Common uses include boxes, baskets, furniture, flooring and hockey sticks.
