The heartwood of sassafras is medium to light brown, the color may darken with age. The sapwood is a pale yellowish brown. Sassafras resembles ash. The grain is straight, with a course, even texture. It is easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Common uses are utility lumber, fence posts and furniture.
